First Presbyterian is a congregation committed to study, service, and worship. We are open to those with questions, doubts, and skepticism. In this way, we seek to reflect the hospitality of Jesus who welcomed all.
We hope that you will find that welcome extended to you through this website. If you have questions, please do not hesitate to contact us. We look forward to extending a warm and cordial welcome to you in person.
Much has changed in Lancaster since a group of twenty-two people banded together over two hundred years ago to form what is now First Presbyterian Church. Above is a very dated picture of the town square in Lancaster taken in the late 1920s or early 1930s. You will note the steeple of First Presbyterian dominating the picture. The 1879 sanctuary still welcomes an array of people each Sunday morning…just as it did in the picture above.
Central to the existence of First Presbyterian Church is Sunday worship. People from all walks of life gather to spend time reflecting on the goodness of God. The congregation is not so large that one can be lost in it; rather it is warm, caring, welcoming and open to all. Worship is a time when we focus, not on what divides, but on what unites. It is a time when we reflect upon the teachings of the Bible and what they can mean for us in our time and culture.
First Presbyterian Church seeks to be a socially responsible congregation. One of our core values is the promotion of social righteousness. As a result, no less than eleven local agencies and ministries are supported financially by the church. We believe strongly in the value of community and are committed to being an integral part of the landscape of our city.
Whether you are new to the Lancaster area or simply looking for a place where you can worship and be accepted for who you are, know that you are welcome in this place.
